Meet the Teacher

Photo of myselfHi! My name is Mrs. Couvillion (Coo-vee-on), and I am SO excited to be part of the Sixth Grade Language Arts Team! More importantly, I am THRILLED to be your child’s teacher! It’s going to be a fun year full of learning and new adventures, and I  can’t wait to see what the year has in store for us. I want to know all about you and your child, but first I’m going to tell you a few things about myself.

I was born in New Orleans, LA, and am the oldest of three! I have two younger brothers, Kevin and Michael. When I graduated from high school, I moved to Baton Rouge to attend Louisiana State University (LSU) – Geaux Tigers – where I majored in Elementary Education. Upon graduation, I received my first teaching position, which was a combination of two long-term positions.

The first semester I taught fifth grade, and the second semester I taught second grade. Since I could not stay at the school, I took another position teaching fourth-grade science which I taught for another year and a half.

In November of 2002, I married my wonderful husband, Stephen, who was in the United States Air Force. After we got married, I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was stationed at Kirkland Air Force Base. In New Mexico, I had the pleasure of teaching 6th-8th graders social studies, language arts, and reading for 9½ years. During those 9½ years, I decided to further my education and obtained my Master’s Degree in Instructional Leadership. In addition, we had two children: Patrick and Emily. Today, Patrick is 18 years old – beginning his freshman year at KS Polytech in Salina, and Emily is 14 years old – a freshman at AHS.  We also have two furbabies -- Bailee and Lexie – who love to make a mess of our house!

In June of 2010, my family and I moved to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where I taught 5th-grade language arts and social studies for three years.

Then, in 2015, we relocated to McConnell Air Force Base for four years, where I had my first experience as a member of Andover Middle School. It was the absolute best experience of my life. Unfortunately, in 2019, the military decided it was time for us to move again. This time we headed to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where my husband worked as the First Sergent at the USAFA prep school. To say the year was an experience was an understatement. After the third blizzard, I was ready to pack my bags and head somewhere warmer. After deep consideration and long discussions, my family and I decided to make Andover, Kansas, our forever home.

In 2020, I was extremely fortunate to be rehired as a sixth/seventh grade ELA teacher!!! I love my job, the families, and the faculty of AMS. It is truly an amazing school!!

I am starting my 23rd year in education and love it like it is my first. I look forward to working with you - students and parents - to make this a memorable and exciting year!
